Pencils come in assorted colors and sizes plus come in packages or individually but their uses are about the same. Every color can create beautiful things independent of the rest but when they are used effectively together, each color enhances the beauty of the others. Their purpose is to put on paper the thoughts or mental images of it’s user in a very colorful and memorable way. So it is, as part of the body of believers, since we are uniquely different but all united in one purpose. The purpose is to serve the Lord and reflect his beauty. Colossians 1:15-23 shows the inter-relationship of God the Father, Christ His Son, and us his people. Verse 15 states, “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.  16For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.  17And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. 18And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. 19For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, 20and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross. 21And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled 22in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight 23if indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard, which was preached to every creature under heaven, of which I, Paul, became a minister”. You can use a pencil artistically and create an etching worth thousands or a picture so disgraceful one wishes they could erase the image from their memory. The choice is not in the pencil but it’s owner yet the outcome is historic since it is written on the minds of others as well as in the “Book of Works” mentioned in Revelation 15. We are the instrument God uses to share the realities of His kingdom with those around us. As we work together, just as the colors in a pencil pack, we can achieve that goal.
