When you think about a pair of glasses, a lot of times we think of the style of glasses and how they look on a person.

A Pair of Glasses:  Question: What do you use glasses for?  A– They make the blinding person to see or improves our focus so one can see more clearly.  B. The lenses are custom made by a vision expert who custom fits the glasses to allow the wearer to improve their focus to see the world clearly.  The Bible, God’s Word is the focus provider for God’s people.   “Study to show yourself approved”.  Just as a pair of glasses have many parts but one purpose; so do we as believers (1 Cor. 12:12: We are all one body with many parts).

Glass lenses:  Good news is they help us see more clearly but if used to redirect the sun, the redirected beam can start fires and burn the things we built.  When we misdirect our focus from the love, forgiveness and acceptance in Christ to being judgmental, causing division and infighting; we burn the very fabric of unity that holds us together and makes cooperative outreach occur.        The Bible is the way God improves our focus.
The Glass Frames: Question:. What good is a pair of glass frames without…

  • …lenses?  Not much!  Frames are made to securely hold the lenses so you can see clearly.  If the lenses are not united properly with the frame then you will not see the best and definitely not clearly.  The Holy Spirit is the frame on which we depend to allow us to understand the Bible as it applies to us.

The color and style of frames:  Q- What is the main motive behind picking out glasses?  Utility, size, style preferences may be some.  Main issue is how the glasses look on me so I make the best impression; especially if it is a first impression!  We need to keep this in mind, so we can make the best impression on the world we live in.  Just as glasses bring out the best in our appearance so we must put our best foot forward to share Christ, help others in their growth and outreach.   As individuals and we as part of the youth group or Sunday school, we have to be sensitive to the needs, interests, and preferences of those we are trying to reach, teach and help.  We, as the God’s people need to adapt the way we behave so we can to reach our friends and share Christ!
Proper Positioning of the Frame and Lenses:  When the pair of glasses including all its parts is placed properly on the face, everything works together as a single unit.  The glasses can’t work without the person wearing them properly and the person can’t work effectively without the glasses!  The purpose for creating the glasses is reached (clear vision, great focus and improved efficiency) but only with cooperation, coordination and wholeheartedness on all parts.  Ro. 8:37 states we are “Overwhelming conquerors in Christ” and Luke 6:48 states. “A house built on a firm foundation will stand strong” and this is how we can be as we trust Christ to guide us.
A Screw Missing:  All is going well, vision is clear and the glasses are working great.  In a short time however a single, almost invisible screw loosens then falls out destroying the effectiveness and appearance of the glasses.  Periodically we forget the importance of every part of the body in which we are a part.  Most the times, we don’t think of a part until it hurts otherwise we just assume on the other parts.  1 Cor. 12:12 declares “The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all the parts are many, they form one body”  In verse 18, “But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be”.  If you feel you are that loose screw, don’t go missing but count your blessings!  God put you in a pivotal and strategic place so do your job wholeheartedly because you are where God wants you. The Bible and the input given to us by the Holly Spirit works together just as glasses with all the different parts work together to fulfill our purposes as a Christian.[/ig_toggle]

A pair of glasses as a whole unit can be used to demonstrate different themes but when each part of a pair of glasses can also be used to teach many life lessons.

You may use glasses fitted within a two glass lens frame to illustrate the importance of the fact that your view and God’s view on life situations must be the same.  Jesus accented the need when he prayed in the garden, “not my will but thine be done”.  When our view of the situation is out of the focus with what God intend, the result is a double-vision, blurred view of the situation, causing our reaction to the situation and the outcomes of our reactions to vary from what God intends for us.
Use a pair of glasses to help focus on what is good and beneficial for you to do or concentrate on, as expressed in Proverbs 23:7 “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.”  When wearing glasses, our vision is sharp because… the glasses are specifically ground and fitted by a master optician to adjust for our specific needs.  Philippian’s 4:8 (abbreviated) calls us to think on, “Whatever is just, noble right, pure, lovely, honorable, excellent and worthy of praise; think on these things.”
What we focus on directly shapes what we do and say plus the outcome is weighed in light of eternity.  Matthew 12: 34b-37 states, “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35A good man out of the good treasure £of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.  36But I say to you that for every idle
word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment.
37For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
A Pair of Glasses:  While holding up a pair of typical glasses, ask, “”Overall, what do you use glasses for?”They help the vision impaired seetheir best or improve one’sfocus so one can see more clearly.  As God’s people, the Bible likewise provides our focusso we operate appropriately. 2 Timothy 2:15: “Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman and not ashamed, rightly handling the Word of Truth”.  A few more life lessons come to mind when we think of the parts of a pair of glasses.
Glass Lenses:  The good news about lenses is that lenses help one see more clearly and sharpens our focusbut only when properly positioned within theirintended frame.  The lenses are custom made by a master optician who grinds and fits the glasses into the frames thus allowingthe wearer to see the world clearly.
When out of their frame, the lenses become useless, just as we do when we withdraw ourselves from the framework of others within the body of Christ.  1 Cor. 12:12 declares “The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all the parts are many, they form one body”
If the lenses areused by themselves to redirect thesun rays by holding them down and at the right angle, therefracted beam can start fires that can burn out of control and destroy everything in the fire’s path.  When we misdirect our focus from the love, forgiveness and acceptance in Christ and redirect it toward being judgmental, causing division and infighting, we too burn the very fabric of unity that holds us together and makes cooperative ministry occur.
When lenses are simply out of adjustment within the frames, they can distort vision and create more damage to the very eyes they were made to improve.  This in turn reduces the effectiveness of the entire body.It is essential that we keep our vision sharp and focused through daily Bible study, prayer, and fellowship.
The Glass Frames:  What good is a great pair oflenses without glass frames?  Both parts are dependent on each other.  Neither is more important than the other; both are essential to fulfilling their joint ultimate call and purpose as a unit.  Frames are made to securely hold the lenses in position so clarity of focus is achieved.  The Holy Spirit is the frame on Whombelievers depend and Who allows us to understand the Bible as it applies to us.  He focuses us so we become effective in the spheres of influence allotted to us.
Color and Style of Frames:  What is the primary motivation behind picking out glasses frames?  We may say lofty things like their utility, size, and trendystylewhich are someconsiderations.  The primary reasonhowever is often just simplyour vanity.  “How do these glasses look on me?” I want to make the best impression; especially if it is a first impression! We want to make the best impression on the world in which God has placed us.  Just as glasses bring out the best in our appearance so we must put our best foot forward to share Christ’s redemptive plan and help others in their spiritual journey.   As individuals andas a group, we,as part of the church, have to be sensitive to the needs, interests, and preferences of those we are trying to reach and teach.  We, as His church need to adapt our methods of corporate worship and evangelistic outreach to reach the current generation with His ageless message.
Proper Positioning of the Frame and Lenses: The fully completed glasses must be properly positioned on your one’s face, just as the believer must be properly positioned within the body of Christ to work together. Unlessall parts of the pair of glasses systematically cooperate and coordinate with each other, the glasses will not serve their intended purposes. We are, according to Roman’s 8:37,“Overwhelming conquerors in Christ”.Luke 6:48 states, “A house built on a firm foundation stands strong”.  We too stand strong and are overwhelming conquers when positioned in the Lord’s framework called the body of Christ!
A Screw Missing:  All is going well, vision is clear, and the glasses are working great.  In a short time however a single, almost invisible screw loosens, then falls out.  The effectiveness and appearance of the glasses have been significantly weakened, or even destroyed.  Periodically we forget the importance of every member of the body in which we are a part. 1 Cor. 12:12 declares “The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all the parts are many, they form one body”.Then in verse 18, “But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be”.  If you feel you are that loose screw or about to be a missing screw, don’t go missing but count your blessings!  Verse 18 clearly states thatGod put you in apivotal and strategic place; so do your job wholeheartedly because you are where God placed you and wants to use you today.  Circumstances may call you elsewhere; then serve wholeheartedly there as well.  In eternity we will account for our stewardship.  Matthew 12:37says, “For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned”. So do right, and God gets the glory, while we receive an eternal reward as well.[/ig_toggle]

Imagine a classroom where every student decides on their own what they will do and when they will do it.  Pandemonium!  How about a sports team where every player does their own thing and plans their own game winning strategy; absurd?  Imagine a work place where no one works together; certain failure is the likely result.

A pair of framed glasses can be used to demonstrate the need for cooperation amongst a team, a collaborative group or any people that share a common goal.  There are many parts that make up a pair of glasses, each part having…

…their particular function.  But though functions vary, they are equally important for the maximum effectiveness of the entire unit.  Cooperation of all parts determines the success of the unit.

Just as you may use a pair of glasses to help focus and present a clear vision on what is good and beneficial for yourself and the team, everyone must work together.  When wearing glasses, our vision is sharp because the glasses are specifically ground and fitted by a master optician to adjust for our specific needs.  Cooperation help in that adjustment process and calls us to think on what is just, noble right, pure, lovely, honorable, excellent and praiseworthy.  As we think on these things we build each other up, encouraging others, praising their successes and cooperation within that framework of behavior strengthened the unit and the collective purpose and goal becomes more attainable.

Glass lenses help one see more clearly and sharpen one’s focus but only when properly positioned within their intended frame.  The lenses are custom made by a master optician who grinds and fits the glasses into the frames thus allowing the wearer to see the world clearly.  When out of their frame, the lenses become useless and not able to complete the intended function.  So it when we withdraw ourselves from the framework of others within the unit.  There is a saying that applies here; “The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all the parts are many, they form one body”.[/ig_toggle]

[ig_toggle heading=”View Object Lesson – Key Points” onload=”closed”]While holding up a pair of typical glasses, ask, “Overall, what do you use glasses for?” Obviously, they help the vision impaired see their best or they improve one’s focus so one can see as clearly as their ability allows. So is it when all parties focus on pre-established goals after appropriate steps are taken to set goals. Goals directly shape what the entire unit does and says so the jointly coordinate and agree upon the outcomes needed to accomplish the goals.

Though not exhaustive, here are some tips for goal setting are:

1. SET ASIDE TIME TO SAVE YOUR TIME AND RESOURCES: Take 15 minutes each morning to make your game plan for the day. Be systematic to save your time and energy. Similarly, the pair…
…of glasses we brought needs to be maintained assuring the screws are tight and lenses are clean every day.
2. SET SPECIFIC GOALS: Just as with the glasses, specific grinding by the optician is needed so is the need to make long and short-term goals whether at work, school or home. If you want to achieve certain goals, give yourself time to achieve them but stay on task. Be realistic in time allotment and set bench marks to measure your progress. The only way to achieve a goal is acting on it. To delay is to fail to achieve so spend time on achieving the goals but pace yourself to avoid burn-out.
3. USE A PRIORITIZED “TO DO LIST: A PRIORITIZED TO DO LIST is the mechanical device that drives your time and energy while on the way to your bench mark and goals of the day, week or project. A calendar (electronic or paper) and the list used together will save resources. Prioritize by doing first things first.
3. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE, STAY FOCUSED BUT AVOID BEING A PERFECTIONIST: You always have to put your glasses on to see well just as procrastination puts us out of focus. Why put something off till tomorrow if you can get it done today. Procrastination is nothing but a big black hole that sucks up resource resulting in increased stress and lost time that you could have used to work on something else. If you watch TV, listen to the radio or cruise the cloud while working, your attention is divided and you lose the battle for time efficiency. Strive for excellence but don’t get hung up on needing to be perfect since it will drain time and not be able to be achieved all the time anyway. Forgive yourself and move on.
4. BE FLEXIBLE BUT START WHAT YOU NEED TO THEN FINISH IT: Break your tasks into manageable, attainable pieces and remember you time is valuable so don’t waste it even though you should be flexible.
5. DON’T LET THE IMPORTANT BLOCK THE ESSENTIAL TASKS: I had a poster hanging in my office which said, “Good, better, best never let it rest. Make your good better, make your better best” I remember it to this day and I have remembered to strive for excellence in all I do. Another saying is, “If it is worth doing, it is worth doing right” but I say if it is worth doing it is worthy of your maximum ability, attitude, energy and skill. Your reputation and legacy is built one word and action at a time and you will be rewarded with the honor and respect you deserve.
6. MULTI-TASK BUT DON’T DOUBLE TASK: Multi-tasking is when you use your time to complete two non-competing tasks. Double tasking is divided energy on competing tasks. An example is letting the printer print as you work on another project that is non-competing for time or running a backup while working on another computer project. Double tasking is trying to talk on the phone while typing an article. Both require the same brain drain so if you try to do both, you will miss something along the way. Imagine trying to look through two pair of glasses at the same time! This is similar to double tasking since your vision is divided.
7. REWARD YOUR PROGRESS AND CELEBRATE SUCCESS! Don’t have to be super sized but celebrate success.[/ig_toggle]
